No one can deny the fact that education and formal training shape our personality, and make us better people. But the value of playing sports is often neglected when we talk about building character, and a well-rounded personality. Athletics isn’t only about improving the physical form since it can have a major impact on how we think, act, and conduct ourselves in the practical world. Here are some of the ways sports can build and shape your personality.

Sports Build Confidence
Assertiveness, taking the first step, and flustering your opponent with a well-thought-out and executed strategy are the building blocks of all major sports. Coincidentally, these are also the building blocks of our careers, personal lives and our lives as a whole. Taking timely action and decisions, leading a team of players, and showing controlled aggression are all excellent ways of building one’s confidence, which you can then assert in real life too.
Sports Foster Teamwork
Each form of sport requires a different team dynamic but the basic tenets of teamwork are the same in all forms of sport. Some teach us to give up on selfish and “hero” plays for the greater good, while others encourage you to hold your ground, stay firm and score for the entire team.

They also teach us to trust in the abilities of our teammates and build a rapport, a telepathic sixth sense with them, so that all team members move together in rhythm and coordination as a unit. All of these qualities are highly practical characteristics that are useful in life outside of the sporting arena as well.
Sports Teaches Us To Lead, and Follow
Sports highlight the very basic nature of life, building up team leaders that the other team members must rally around. As the circumstances evolve, the followers can take charge and become the leader, but he must exhibit some of the qualities that make him a suitable candidate for the role. Sports also diminish the ego of a person so that he has no qualms about following the team leader, and also enhance his skills and confidence in order to become a leader himself one day.

Sports Enhances Mindfulness
Sports not only improve physical health and form but also increases mental toughness. Mental toughness leads to improved focus, the ability to leave all else and focus on your goal, and neglecting all things secondary to your goal. Consequently, this mental toughness is key to achieving all your life goals too.
