All work and no play can make us miserable even during the best of times. Humans need a healthy work-life balance and playing some form of sports is crucial for leading a healthy, balanced, and happy life. In addition to the myriad physical and mental health benefits of playing a sport, the activity teaches us a number of life lessons that can be useful outside the sporting arena as well.

Learning To Work As A Team
No matter how much we try to become self-reliant and self-sufficient, all of us need to learn to work in a group, have reconciliation and situation-diffusing skills, and generally learn how to co-exist with differences of opinions, all the while working towards a shared goal. Playing competitive sports is a great way to learn the social skill of increasing harmony and the we-feeling, as it enables us to work out our differences in a healthy way while we work hard to achieve our targets and ultimately win the game.

Learn From Your Failures
All of us fail in one way or another. Sports have the definite outcome of either winning or losing, and we all must face defeat at one point. It makes us graceful losers and teaches us that there is always another opportunity to redeem ourselves. Only hard work, determination, and practice lead us to success, and after every fall, we must get up, count our losses, and try again.
Happiness Is In The Little Things
Watching our team secure a win, or better yet, contributing towards the success of our sports team, both situations bring us immense happiness. The sense of accomplishment and the high of winning a match is unparalleled. Sports teaches us that in life, happiness can be found in the little things and feelings, and not necessarily grand, luxurious things. Playing a sport makes you enjoy the little joys in life.

Extreme Focus
Sports make us focus on the one thing that matters the most in that instant: securing a goal, catching the ball, or scoring a point. Nothing else matters at that moment–it’s just you and your goal. We need this kind of focus in other areas of our lives too and practicing a sport can enable you maximize your focus and determination.
